Play and Force

Context: On August 24th, I went to the white night with my friends and I saw many performances, and projection installations. I really enjoyed one of the projection installation called Cluster. It was an audiovisual installation which explores relationships between time, space and perception through abstract of light and sound. I want to do something similar to this and create an audio-visual video using shapes. I got inspired by the trapnation music videos.  As the music plays, the shape zooms in and out each time according to the song.            

Joanie Lemercier creates light based audio-visual installations that explores our universe through the presentation of geometric and bright glowing shapes. She created an installation based on the exploration of stars, constellations and cosmos by the beauty of geometric shapes. 

Audio-visual installations is playful as it offers audience members an opportunity to become involved in the process by image and sound output from a computer.

Method: I am going to create a video in which the shape reacts to the sound. I am going to try to work in after effects to get this result.

 Response/Reflection: Posted above is my video documentation of shapes reacting with sound. I used sound as force for the stars to react in such a way. As I was working, I faced many problems, as I didn't know much about the tools in after effects. At first, the shape was not matching at all with the sound, it looked messed up. I played with the tools for a long time and realized that I had missed a step. As I worked again, I was so happy and it was almost looking like one of the song videos on YouTube. This exercise is related to play because it allows the audiences to engage into the audio-visuals. It brings emotions, and excitement as we see shapes reacting with sound. Interactive installations are often presented as environments open for exploration determined by individual action, curiosity, and play.
